I've been reading a lot of books along this trip, and it's not worth lugging them home, so when I finish a book I set it free, out in the wild, by putting a little "free" sign on it and leaving it somewhere.
Cue the music!
I was sitting at the airport in Geneva waiting for my flight to Prague, and decided to make a list of all of the books I've freed. It's sort of ridiculous. Here goes:
- Lost Girls and Love Hotels. Purchased at the Strand in NYC before the trip; freed at the Oak Hotel in Tokyo.
- Lonely Planet Tokyo. Loaned to me by Alex, one of Dinah's friends' friends who writes for Lonely Planet; freed at the Oak Hotel in Tokyo. (Sorry, Alex!)
- Lonely Planet Kyoto. Given to me by Jane before the trip; freed at our ryokan in Kyoto.
- Time Out Tokyo. Given to me by Jane before the trip; freed at the Oak Hotel in Tokyo.
- Fog City Nocturne. Given to me by Dinah before the trip; freed at the Number Eight Hostel in Kuala Lumpur.
- Lonely Planet Malaysia. Purchased at Book Crossing in the Ferry Building before the trip; freed at the mall at the base of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur in a fit of pique at its outdatedness.
- Barefoot Guide to Malaysia. Purchased at Kinokuniya in the mall at the base of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur; freed at the Turtle Bay Resort on Pulau Perhentian Kecil off the coast of Malaysia.
- Thud. Purchased at Kinokuniya in the mall at the base of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, freed at Father's Guesthouse in Tanah Rata, Malaysia.
- McNally's Folly. Purchased at a random newsstand on the main street in Tanah Rata, Malaysia; freed at Father's Guesthouse in Tanah Rata, Malaysia.
- Singularity Sky. Purchased at a random newsstand on the main street in Tanah Rata, Malaysia; freed at the Turtle Bay Resort on Pulau Perhentian Kecil off the coast of Malaysia.

- Blink. Purchased at Asia Books at some random mall in Bangkok; freed at the Atlanta Hotel in Bangkok.
- The Tipping Point. Purchased at Asia Books at some random mall in Bangkok; freed at the Park Hotel in Calcutta.
- The Rough Guide to India. Given to me by Jane before the trip; freed at the Jaypee Palace Hotel in Agra.
- Five Point Someone. Purchased at the Oxford Bookstore in Calcutta; freed at the Calcutta train station.
- A Brief History of Time. Purchased at a book stand in the Calcutta train station; freed at the Dekeling Hotel in Darjeeling.
- Round the World in 80 Days. Purchased at the Oxford Bookstore in Darjeeling; sent home from London.
