At its largest, the earth is about forty thousand kilometers around. That's just a tenth of the distance from the earth to the moon, just 0.0003 Astronomical Units. And I'm going to go around it.
I'm a lawyer, finishing up a judicial clerkship before taking a great job at a great law firm here in San Francisco. Before I start that job, I'm taking two and a half months off to travel around the world.
"Two and a half months?," you ask. "That's 80 days. Have you got a loyal porter named Passepartout lined up, Fogg-wannabe?"
Nope. This won't be a Verne-style trip. Fogg's journey was a mad dash from continent to continent, hardly stopping to save a stoned widow from self-immolation. I'll be spending much more time in each region, and I hope to learn what life is like in parts of the First, Second, and Third Worlds I've never visited.
And besides, Fogg traveled eastward. I'm going west. It's totally different.
My trip will begin here in San Francisco, heading first to Tokyo, then flying to Singapore, travleing by rail and bus up the Malay Peninsula to Bangkok, flying to Kolkata, traveling by rail to Delhi, flying to London, flying to Helsinki, then traveling by boat and overland to Prague. Then, straight back to San Francisco.
I hope you enjoy the ride.
